Post-Operative Recovery
A successful operation is only as good as the recovery and rehabilitation that follows. The immediate post-operative period is centred around pain control and comfort. Following this a procedure specific rehabilitation programme will be initiated to help you return to your functional demands.
What happens after the operation?
Following your operation, you will return to the ward where the priority will be centred around pain control and comfort. This will be guided by your anaesthetist and monitored by your nurse.
Once you are on the ward, Dr Amaranath will review your progress, update you on the surgery and provide you with a procedure specific rehabilitation programme. In most cases, a physiotherapist will also see prior to discharge, to help guide you through the rehabilitation process.
How long do I stay in hospital?
The duration of your hospital stay will be dependent on the type of operation performed and your recovery. Below are some examples of the time spent in hospital for different procedures:
Arthroscopic Shoulder Rotator Cuff repair - Overnight Stay
Shoulder or Elbow Replacement - 1 to 2 days
Arthroscopic Shoulder Stabilisation - Overnight Stay
Arthroscopic Shoulder decompression + biceps tenodesis - Day only
Elbow Arthroscopy - Day only
Distal Biceps Repair - Day only
Cubital Tunnel Release - Day only
When do I start my rehabilitation?
Commonly rehabilitation programmes begin within the first week following surgery.
While in hospital you will be provided with a specific rehab programme which a physiotherapist will go through with you prior to discharge.
We believe in collaboration and team work when it comes to your recovery and work with both yourself and your physiotherapist to optimise your results.
Please refer to my specific rehabilitation protocols for time frames and exercises for the different upper limb conditions.
When can I return to work, sport, driving, etc?
Timeframes can differ depending on the type of operation and requirements of each individual. Please refer to the bottom of my rehab protocol of your condition as a guide to the return of functional activities.
If you have any questions or concerns about your operation please feel free to contact the rooms.
