ABOUT
Dr Jay Amaranath is an Australian trained orthopaedic shoulder and elbow surgeon, with national and international fellowships in arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery of the upper limb. He provides a patient centred model of care that incorporates the individual’s needs and expectations together with the most up to date treatment options.
TRAINING
Jay grew up in Sydney before moving to Perth to complete his medical degree. He then returned to his home city to commence his internship and pursue his career in orthopaedics. In the following years he was selected into the Australian Orthopaedic Association’s (AOA) Training programme in Sydney, NSW. He gained extensive experience working and training in multiple major trauma, paediatric and arthroplasty centres, before being awarded a Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS).
AUSTRALIAN FELLOWSHIP EXPERIENCE
Jay completed his first upper limb fellowship at the Melbourne Orthopaedic Group with A/Prof Greg Hoy and A/Prof Eugene Ek. During the fellowship he gained extensive experience in the treatment of elite sport related injuries of the upper extremity (using arthroscopic and minimally invasive techniques), shoulder and elbow arthroplasty, along with complex upper limb trauma.
EUROPEAN FELLOWSHIP EXPERIENCE
The following year he undertook further subspecialty fellowship training in Europe at the internationally renowned Balgrist University Hospital in Zurich, Switzerland. Under the mentorship of one of the pioneers of shoulder surgery Professor Christian Gerber and A/Prof Karl Wieser he gained further experience in advanced techniques involving 3D modelled patient specific shoulder arthroplasty, tendon transfers and complex shoulder arthroscopy.
During this period, he also spent time as a visiting upper limb fellow at Rennes University Hospital in Rennes, France and The Shoulder Unit at Santy Orthopaedic Centre in Lyon, France. Here he observed the latest techniques in shoulder surgery, such as the use of virtual reality technology for total shoulder replacements from two of the leading upper limb surgeons in Europe, Dr Philippe Colin and Dr Lionel Neyton.
Living and working in Europe provided a unique access to a wealth of knowledge, modern techniques and different approaches in upper limb surgery. These allow him to offer his patients a high standard of care and clinical judgement.
TEACHING & RESEARCH
Jay has a special interest in teaching and research. He has completed a Graduate Diploma in Clinical Education and is committed to help educate the next generation of doctors and orthopaedic surgeons. He has been involved in multiple research publications and believes in evidence-based strategies to help guide his choice of treatment.

Jay is a dedicated and caring surgeon, father and husband. He values the importance of family and enjoys spending time with his wife and two young daughters. When time permits he is an avid golfer, cricketer and cook.
